The Best Ag Podcasts of 2019

I love podcasts. I love agriculture. That’s one of the many reasons that I started The Modern Acre podcast along with my brother and business partner, Tim. Our goal for the podcast is to be one of the best ag podcasts out there, providing disproportionate value to our listeners every week.

With that being said, we love listening to other ag podcasts and strongly believe that there’s a place for every voice in agriculture. There’s no reason that people who are interested in agriculture can’t listen to multiple podcasts for content. Especially because there are shows that have a particular focus or niche within agriculture.

Think about it. Are you a podcast listener? Do you only listen to one podcast on a given topic? I sure don’t! I listen to a TON of different business related podcasts! Frankly, I’m always looking for more good shows. The amount of time I’ve spent listening to podcasts over the past few years has gone up, not down. Granted, I have a long commute, but the upward listening trend is consistent with all podcast listeners.

I wanted to share a few of the best ag podcasts here on The Modern Acre blog so you can check them out and maybe add them in to your podcast regimine.

1. Small Farm Nation

It only makes sense to start with Tim Young’s podcast Small Farm Nation because (at the time) Tim was the first guest of our show that also had a podcast! You can check out his episode here. But more than that, Tim has a wealth of knowledge in the world of small farm marketing. He left his successful career in corporate America to “opt-out” and start farming small scale. His success followed him as he built multiple direct-to-consumer brands before ultimately selling his operation. He now helps small farmers around the country follow in his footsteps.

Tim has great episodes each week that typically address small farm business and marketing topics. I learn something everytime I listen, even though our farm isn’t doing direct-to-consumer branding right now.

2. Locally Grown In

Another past guest and friend who recently started a podcast of his own is Henry Gordon-Smith. Henry is one of the biggest names and influencers in urban agriculture. His episode on The Modern Acre is definitely one of our favorite, where he talks about he grew his business Agritecture from a blog to a full-blown consulting firm. You can check his episode out here.

His new podcast, Locally Grown In, helps entrepreneurs who are on a mission to grow food locally. I really like the model of the podcast, because each episode focuses on local agriculture of a different city. If you have interest in urban ag, this is the ag podcast for you.

3. Future of Agriculture

One of my favorite ag podcasts is the Future of Agriculture hosted by Tim Hammerich. Tim is an agribusiness recruiter and uses the podcast to showcase all areas of ag business, from rural entrepreneurship to food security to sustainability at scale.

Tim does a great job diving into different areas that are driving innovation to help solve the growing challenges in agriculture. If you like The Modern Acre podcast, I’m sure you’ll also love the Future of Ag podcast.

4. The Chaffed Hay

Another former podcast guest was Jay Hill, who farms in New Mexico and west Texas. Jay has scaled his farm as a millennial farmer leveraging social media to grow his brand and business. You can check out his episode here.

Jay recently started a new podcast called The Chaffed Hay, where a range of agricultural topics are discussed. You can tell them have a lot of fun making the podcast and interacting with their audience. Also interesting is the fact that The Chaffed Hay is also the name of their direct-to-consumer brand of feed, which they discuss on the show.

5. Field Work

Field Work is a brand new podcast from the major ag influencer NM Millennial Farmer, Zach Johnson. He and his co-host, Mitchell Hora talk about agriculture from the perspective of two farmers focused on sustainable agriculture and best practices. I’m excited to tune in to listen!

6. Young Farmers Podcast

This podcast is great for those interested in the policy and economic impact concerning farmers. Host Lindsey Lusher Shute, co-founder of the National Young Farmers Coalition talks every week to scientists, young activists, and, of course, farmers to discuss the issues affecting agriculture nationally and globally. The Young Farmers Podcast will help uncover the issues, challenges, and opportunities of farmers more clearly.

7. Agtech – So What?

Sarah Nolet is the CEO and partner at AgThentic, a strategic advisory and consulting form in the agtech space, based in Australia. Sarah joined us on The Modern Acre podcast to share more about her work with AgThentic. You can listen to her podcast episode here.

Sarah also hosts a great podcast all about agtech that she recently revamped to the name AgTech – So What? She discusses the intersection of agriculture and technology with innovators in the space. Learn more about everything from venture capital to accelerators in this great podcast.

8. The Modern Acre

Of course, I had to include our podcast on the list of best ag podcasts! If you love business and entrepreneurship, The Modern Acre is the ag podcast for you. Every week, we interview someone innovating in agriculture from agtech startup founders to entrepreneurial farmers. The topics cover farming, direct-to-consumer brands, alternative agriculture, ag tech, social media and marketing, and robotics.

Tim and I are involved in our farm in Northern California and have a passion for bringing the next-generation of ag innovators who think big and differently about business together. If you haven’t already, we’d love to have you tune in!
